First Graders Get Hands-On With Composting

First-grade students at Sunrise Elementary School enjoyed a visit from Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling. The presentation introduced students to the basics of composting and how food scraps and natural materials can be transformed into healthy soil.

The students learned how composting works and why it’s important for the environment. They discovered what items can be composted, how decomposition happens, and how compost helps plants grow.

The highlight of the visit came when students had the chance to dig into the compost themselves, worms and all. As they searched for worms, they learned firsthand how the tiny creatures play a big role in breaking down organic materials.
