Five students from Mrs. Phetsomphou’s first-grade class at Sunrise Estates Elementary School competed as a team in the Westmoreland County SumDog Competition in May.
Avery Fitzroy, Bekir Güler, Rocco Mlaka, Josiah Panuccio, and Skylar Schmidt each answered 1,000 math questions in one week. After competing against 492 students in 43 classrooms from 13 schools throughout Westmoreland County, the Sunrise team won first place. In the individual category, Josiah Panuccio took second place overall by answering 979 questions correctly. His four teammates all finished in the top 50 with an average of 917 correct answers.
