‘Penny Wars’ are great fun for the students of Sunrise Estates Elementary School. The latest penny war, held the week of March 28, was spearheaded by SLAs Gianna Castaldo and Whitney Robosky to raise money for Autism Speaks.
Penny wars challenge students to bring in coins to support a cause. For every penny they bring in and deposit in their classroom’s bucket, they earn a point for their room. They can also bring in silver coins to deposit in other buckets to deduct points from other classrooms. The three winning homerooms, Mrs. Meyers (kindergarten), Mrs. Miller (fourth grade), and Mrs. Hawk (fifth grade) received a special treat at lunch that the class voted on.
“Just by collecting coins (no bills were brought in), we were able to raise $2,418.06,” commented Castaldo. “We are extremely impressed with the generosity of our students and happy to support such a worthy cause.”
