Lessons Of The Oregon Trail

At Sunrise Estates Elementary School, Mrs. Zopf’s third-grade students have completed a Social Studies unit on pioneer life, the westward expansion movement, and the Oregon Trail.

To reinforce the material they learned, the students worked in groups to make their own pioneer quilts.  Each group designed a quilt to represent the pioneers and their adventures, gave the quilt a name, and then explained their designs, the varying patterns, and the stitches they used.  Classroom designs included a Trail Quilt, Hard Work Quilt, Building a Settlement Quilt, Bye Bye Quilt, and a Prairie Weather Quilt.
