Mosaics Blend Math and Art

3rd-grade students at Sunrise Estates Elementary School created colorful math mosaics to demonstrate their knowledge of quadrilateral shapes and their attributes.

Students learned about the history of mosaic art and were then tasked with creating a mosaic of their own using only quadrilateral shapes.  After cutting out shapes and assembling them into a mosaic pattern, each student completed a key to detail the types of quadrilaterals used, how many of each type were used, and listing their attributes.

The mosaics now hang in a colorful display in the Sunrise hallway.
