The students in Mr. Pompilio’s third-grade classes at Sunrise Estates Elementary School learned about the events of September 11, 2021 through the heroic story of Welles Crowther.
Welles was an equities trader in the World Trade Center as well as a volunteer firefighter. Instead of putting himself first that day, he saved 20 lives. In the ensuing stories and footage of the tragedy, the story of Welles’ red bandana - which he carried with him since he was a child - became a symbol of heroism. As part of the lesson, Mr. Pompilio’s students got to choose a 9/11 hero and write about their actions on that day. Students were also given a red bandana to give to their own personal hero.
