Kindergarten students at Level Green, Sunrise, and Trafford Elementary Schools benefited from a grant funded through the Penn-Trafford Community Education Foundation.
The grant provided all the materials needed to raise butterflies from caterpillars. To begin the project, the students studied the behaviors of caterpillars, watched them eat, and then shed their skin. The classes observed the skin under microscopes. Next, students were captivated by watching the developments from chrysalises to butterflies and logged their observations in a Science Journal. The classes gathered outside to release the butterflies in mid-May.
